Short answer: you can set up a loyalty program without developing an app or asking for downloads by using QR and NFC that open a PWA (a web-app that opens in the browser). The customer scans a QR or taps their phone on an NFC, their digital stamp card opens, done. No app store, no friction and no cost of coding a native app.
Why avoid the native app
Developing your own app costs thousands of euros and months of work, and then you hit the real wall: almost nobody wants to download a coffee shop's app. Asking for it at the counter, with a queue behind, sinks adoption. For 99% of venues, a native app is overengineering.
The alternative: QR + NFC + PWA
- QR: a code printed on the cup, the counter or a poster. The customer scans it with their camera.
- NFC: a chip the customer taps with their phone (like contactless payment). Even faster than the QR.
- PWA (Progressive Web App): the "app" opens in the browser from that QR/NFC. It looks and works like an app, but it doesn't download. It can be saved to the home screen if the customer wants.
Step by step
- Define the mechanic: how many stamps per reward, which prizes, which levels.
- Create the digital card (PWA) with your branding: logo, colors, your products.
- Generate the QR/NFC access points: stickers for cups, tags for the counter, and —if you want— built into your merch.
- Place the scan points where the purchase happens: counter and cup.
- Train your team: in practice, it's "tap your phone here". A barista who uses Instagram masters it in minutes.
- Collect the email with consent on the first stamp, to have a direct channel.

How long and how much
The advantage of the phygital approach is that there's no from-scratch development per client: the system already exists and gets customized. The physical install (NFC tags + QR stickers) is done at the counter in under 10 minutes, and there are no mandatory monthly fees.
How Coffee Passport does it
Coffee Passport is exactly this setup, ready to use. The customer scans the QR or taps the NFC of their tote bag, their cup or the counter, and a PWA opens with your branding: their stamp passport, badges by origin and levels, without downloading anything. The kit includes the NFC tags for the counter and the QR stickers for cups, and it installs in under 10 minutes. It's a one-time payment (pilot €675), with no mandatory monthly fees.

Frequently asked questions
What is a PWA and how is it different from an app?
A PWA is a web-app that opens in the browser and behaves like an app, but without downloading from the app store. The customer can save it to their home screen if they want.
Is QR or NFC better for loyalty?
NFC is faster (just tap the phone), but QR works on any phone with a camera. The ideal is to offer both: NFC on the counter/merch and QR on the cups.
Do I need special hardware?
No. NFC tags and QR stickers are cheap and stick on with no installation. You don't need a reader or a special POS.
How long does it take my baristas to learn it?
Minutes. For the customer it's "tap your phone here"; for the barista, placing the scan point and little else.
